See what a useful cybersecurity finding looks like.
This sample shows the level of clarity we aim for in an assessment report. The company, configuration and finding are invented; they are not based on client work.
Privileged Microsoft 365 accounts are not consistently protected by MFA
Business context: Example Accounting Co. uses Microsoft 365 for email, files and customer information. Its IT provider manages several administrator accounts.
What the assessment observed
During a fictional, read-only review, two standing administrator accounts appeared outside an MFA enforcement policy. The observation would require validation with the tenant administrator and consideration of emergency-access arrangements.
Evidence the report would refer to
- Current privileged-role assignment export, dated and scoped to the agreed tenant
- Identity and access policy configuration reviewed during a supervised session
- Documented exceptions and business owner responses where available
Why the business should care
If an attacker obtains the password to an unprotected privileged account, they may be able to access settings, read information or weaken other controls. The specific consequence depends on that account’s permissions.
Practical next steps
- Ask the IT provider to identify all standing and eligible privileged accounts.
- Confirm appropriate MFA enforcement and review any legitimate exceptions.
- Ensure emergency-access accounts follow a separately documented and monitored approach.
- Retest enforcement and record who accepted any remaining risk.
Ownership and validation
Suggested action owner: IT manager or managed service provider. Evidence of completion: updated identity policy, current administrator inventory and an agreed validation test.
An actual review would include a defined scope, evidence references, severity method, limitations, action register and management walkthrough. We do not assume that an observed setting proves the absence or presence of every compensating control.
What you take away from a real engagement
- An executive summary written for a business decision-maker
- A prioritised register of observed weaknesses and evidence limitations
- A practical action plan for your team or IT provider
- A discussion of how to check that important fixes have worked
